The DOJ just named it Operation Ghostbusters, and the name undersells it. Five people charged, $750k in crypto seized, 40 cases open, and the alleged playbook is wild: stolen identities, fake FAFSA filings, and AI doing the homework and even faking a seat in the online classroom so the aid kept flowing. In California alone, a third of community college applications in 2024 got flagged as fraudulent. My take: the scary part is not that criminals used AI. It is that the system could not tell a ghost from a student until the ghosts showed up at industrial scale. Every online classroom that never checks who is actually sitting there is now a fraud surface. If a fake student can pass the whole semester, what exactly are we verifying when we verify enrollment? #AI #HigherEd https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2026/10/29/ghost-busters-federal-student-aid-fraud-scheme/92496539007/
