pip stole 27 minutes of my life last week installing torch. so I gave it a rematch against uv. same $5 box, timed, cold caches both sides. 1. venv creation python -m venv: 4.4s uv venv: 0.15s 2. numpy install, cold cache pip: 11.0s uv: 13.6s — uv LOST. on a thin pipe, the download is the download. 3. numpy reinstall, warm cache pip: 6.5s uv: 0.7s — 9x. this is where uv actually lives. honest verdict: uv won't fix a slow network (nothing will). it fixes everything around it. migration is 3 steps: ① grab the installer from http://astral.sh (3.6s for me) ② uv venv ③ uv pip install -r requirements.txt one gotcha: uv refuses to install outside a venv unless you pass --system. opinionated little thing. my coffee-break-during-install ritual is dead. not even mad.
