I’ve been sorting through my record collection again. I’ve bought a few more records recently, so it’s time to get them properly categorised and onto the shelves. Shelf One — American, British, European & Japanese Music American pop and rock, including grunge and indie rock; British pop and rock, including post-rock and releases from 4AD; pop and rock from across Europe; and Japanese pop and rock. Shelf Two — World Music, Electronic Music & Hong Kong Music Traditional and folk music from around the world. Electronic music, including lounge, chill-out, psychedelic, avant-garde, industrial, hip-hop, erotic, ambient, dark ambient and black ambient. New Age music; Hong Kong pop music; and soundtracks from Hong Kong cinema. Shelf Three — Jazz, Classical Music & Extreme Metal Jazz, country, easy listening, nursery rhymes and children’s music. Classical music. Extreme metal and related genres, including death metal, gothic metal, grindcore, industrial metal, heavy metal, hard rock, Viking metal, symphonic metal, rap metal, thrash metal, art metal, art rock and nu metal. Branded music — bespoke background music created for commercial products, shops, car manufacturers and other brands. Shelf Four — Chinese Music, International Soundtracks, Animation & Video Games Traditional Chinese music; mainland Chinese pop and rock; and soundtracks from mainland Chinese films. Taiwanese pop and rock, along with Taiwanese film soundtracks. Soundtracks from documentaries, films and television programmes. Film soundtracks from Europe, India and other regions outside North America. Animated film soundtracks. Video game soundtracks, including music from home console games and large-scale arcade machines. Shelf Five — Hollywood & North American Film Music Hollywood film scores and soundtracks, along with film music from the rest of North America. Five shelves. Decades of music, memories and questionable spending decisions. And somehow, I still can’t bring myself to throw a single record away.
