Today I saw that Siri in China will use Alibaba’s Qwen for some requests. That got me thinking: having a huge tech business doesn’t automatically put you at the front of the AI model race. Look at the established giants and their own model families: Google → Gemini Meta → Llama and Muse Alibaba → Qwen Microsoft → MAI Amazon → Nova Tencent → Hunyuan Baidu → ERNIE ByteDance → Seed / Doubao-Seed Apple → Apple Foundation Models These aren’t all in the same league. Google is competing at the frontier. Meta’s Muse is mounting a serious challenge. Alibaba has released influential open-weight Qwen models, though its place in the overall top tier is still debatable. And Apple, Microsoft and Amazon aren’t short of money, computing power or engineers. They build their own models and work with outside providers too. So what separates a company that has an AI model from one whose model you’d actually pick over the best alternatives?
