I think this kind of reaction is pretty normal for a three-year-old. When he spills his water, he probably feels frustrated or upset, so he says, “It's because Mommy poured the water!” It's not necessarily that he's deliberately trying to blame someone else. At that age, children are still learning how to manage their emotions and understand why things happen. And when he's already upset, even a perfectly reasonable explanation probably won't get through to him. Maybe it's better to help him calm down first, then gently explain, “You wanted some water, remember? Mommy just helped you pour it. It's okay to spill sometimes. Let's try to be more careful next time.” I don't think he's already learned how to avoid responsibility at three. I think he's still learning what responsibility actually means.
