I’ve always been a fairly laid-back person. The only time I allow myself to get truly excited is when I’m painting. In everyday life, though, I’ve never been one to rush. Everything has its place in my day. Taking the children to and from school, shopping for groceries, cooking, cleaning, painting, listening to music, and creating with AI. My days have always been quite orderly, and I’ve always been comfortable with that rhythm. But ever since I started taking X seriously, I’ve noticed something changing in me. I’ve become a little more impatient, a little more restless. That’s not really who I am. Last Sunday, I had quite a nasty fall. It was serious enough to keep me at home recovering for several days. And during those quiet days, I’ve had plenty of time to think. I’ve realised that I shouldn’t allow myself to become like this. I want to be the person I used to be. A little slower, a little more patient, a little more attentive to the small things. I want to put my energy back where it belongs — into creating things that mean something to me. I’ve just had a lovely long bath. Now I’m going to pour myself a glass of whisky, light a cigar, and let my mind settle. And there’s something else I’d like to say. To be fair, the Loafer Girl and the Lip-Piercing Girl have genuinely touched me this time. When they heard I’d hurt myself, one immediately asked whether I’d damaged my good looks. The other wanted to know whether I’d be left with a scar on my face. I couldn’t help laughing. Since then, they’ve been regularly video-calling me and sending me messages on WeChat, asking how I’m recovering. I know plenty of younger women, but when something actually happened to me, these were the two who genuinely cared. And that means more to me than they probably realise. So perhaps this little accident wasn’t entirely a bad thing. It reminded me that life isn’t about how quickly we move, how much attention we receive, or how many people appear to like us. It’s about knowing what matters, recognising the people who genuinely care, and not losing ourselves along the way. I don’t need to become a different person just because the world around me moves faster. I’d rather remain the man I’ve always been. A painter who takes his time, enjoys the little things, and still believes that a quiet, ordinary life can be a beautiful one. And to those two girls — thank you. You made an old painter feel rather loved. Now, back to my whisky. The world can wait a little. 🥃
