A refund event completes, but a delayed 'payment_succeeded' webhook arrives 3 minutes later and re-enables premium access. Sounds familiar? Network packet delivery is asynchronous. Your database must never trust arrival order: 1. Strict State Machine guards Model your transaction lifecycle as a directed acyclic graph. Once an order transitions to TERMINAL (e.g., REFUNDED / CANCELLED), incoming 'SUCCESS' events must be dropped idempotently with a 200 OK acknowledgment. 2. Versioning over timestamps Never trust third-party system clock parity. Rely on monotonic event version numbers or transaction revision IDs. Only transition state if incoming_version > current_version. 3. Pessimistic lock on execution Acquire a row-level lock or distributed Redis lock on the aggregate root before evaluating transition guards. Prevent race conditions from concurrent webhook retries. State transitions must be mathematically forward-only. #FullStack #SystemDesign #SoftwareEngineering #Backend #Stripe
