US Q3 real GDP grew at a 3.4% annualized rate, above Q2’s 2.2% and the 3.2% consensus. Consumption contributed 2.52 percentage points, business and residential investment 1.66 points, and inventories another 1.61 points, while trade subtracted 3.32 points. Growth remains resilient, although the inventory contribution may not repeat. Final demand will need to carry more weight in Q4. September PCE inflation also accelerated: headline prices rose 0.5% monthly and 3.6% annually, while core increased 0.3% and 3.1%, respectively. Household finances looked softer. Real disposable income fell 0.3%, real spending was flat, and the saving rate declined to 3.8%, its lowest since October 2022. Strong quarterly growth masks a thinner purchasing-power cushion by September. The combination complicates any move toward Fed easing and supports the December hike debate. However, a lower saving rate alone does not establish that consumption is being financed entirely through borrowing. Watch whether $COST and $WMT capture value-seeking demand, while energy earnings remain sensitive to oil. $TIP and $SCHP provide inflation-linked exposure, but real yields and duration still affect returns; elevated inflation does not guarantee ETF gains. The GDP report looks healthy; household budgets look tighter. Watch Nov. 2 manufacturing ISM, Nov. 4 services ISM, Nov. 6 employment and consumer sentiment, and Nov. 10 CPI. If inventories stop supporting growth while incomes lag prices, Q4 consumption faces a tougher test. Companies still need customers with enough purchasing power to sustain revenue growth.
