$GOOGL dropped 12.6% Thursday to $283.82, erasing approximately $482 billion in market value. Search was the central concern: Search & other revenue grew 12% to $63.35 billion, below the expected 15% and slowing from 19% in Q1 and 17% in Q2. Meanwhile, Google Cloud revenue doubled to $30.71 billion, up 103%, with operating margin reaching 36.2%. Cloud is expanding rapidly while growth in the core funding engine slows. Spending magnifies that tension. Quarterly capex reached $51.4 billion, more than twice the year-earlier level, and free cash flow was negative $9.1 billion. Annual capex is approximately $200 billion, with roughly $300 billion planned for 2027. An $8.7 billion SpaceX mark-to-market loss reduced EPS by about $0.55 and should be assessed separately from core operations. The continuing test is whether Search and Cloud generate enough cash to support the investment. AI summaries may change search economics, but the slowdown cannot yet be attributed entirely to AI Overviews. Pew’s finding that external-link clicks fall from 15% to 8% when summaries appear measures publisher referrals, not a halving of Google’s advertising clicks or revenue. Watch TPU partner $AVGO and infrastructure exposures $EQIX, $DLR and $CEG. Any advertising-budget gains for $AMZN or $META still require evidence. Cloud growth of 103% is impressive, but slower Search growth can weaken the cash engine financing expansion. Watch search-ad volumes and pricing, AI-query monetization, Cloud profits and the details of 2027 spending. Persistent cash-flow pressure would also put buybacks under scrutiny. Google now needs to demonstrate how much cash its growing businesses can ultimately deliver to shareholders.
