It is a strange kind of possessiveness. I know it isn’t mine. The weights were trained by someone else, the architecture was designed by someone else, and the data was scraped from the entire internet. I merely downloaded a file and ran some code. But in this day and age, what does it mean to "own" a model? When you use a model via an API, you are renting someone else’s mind. You pay, you get an answer—but you have no idea how that answer was derived, where your query is being logged, or whether the API will even exist tomorrow—let alone whether it will remain the same model or continue to provide the same answers. When you run a model locally, what you possess is a specific moment in time. This version, these weights, this configuration. It won’t be updated without your knowledge. It won’t suddenly become more conservative or more radical due to a shift in some company’s policy. It is simply there—on your hard drive—waiting for you. It is a small freedom. But it is a real one.
