Northrop Grumman lost their F/A-XX bid because the US navy deemed its aerodynamic design as too "exotic and ambitious". How exotic? Northrop had a tailless lambda wing fighter with no canards (basically a Chinese J-50). While the Boeing proposal has canards. Northrop Grumman's design when attempting pitch control at high angles of attack, would rely entirely on complex, immature flight-control software and thrust vectoring. Boeing’s design uses canards to generate direct vortex lift and keep the nose up during slow carrier approaches, reducing that software risk. This is the sign of a declining American empire, their weapons stop being ambitious and have to deal with serious compromises just to push the program forward. Whereas China's designs are uncompromising, designed to suit our ambitious targets of air dominance for the rest of this century.
