Turkish people have asked me what Chinese people really think about Islamic countries. The honest answer is that most Chinese people know almost nothing about the Islamic world. And that includes me. From what I've observed, Chinese people tend to have a very positive impression of wealthy Middle Eastern Arabs. They see those rich Gulf Arabs as sophisticated and civilized. But when it comes to most other Muslim-majority countries outside Southeast Asia — with places like Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei being notable exceptions — many Chinese people tend to associate them with terrorism. They basically assume that these countries are full of terrorists. Yes, that's pretty much the reality of how many Chinese people view the Islamic world. So how much do Chinese people actually know about it? Almost nothing. To most Chinese people, the Islamic world is still a complete black box. It's an entire part of the world that remains largely unknown to us.
