——国立故宫博物院 --- The Jiangshang Letter is a calligraphic work from the Song Dynasty (960–1279), penned by Su Shi approximately ninety days before his death. Written on paper as a folded leaf, its dimensions measure roughly 30.3 cm vertically and 30.5 cm horizontally. On May 27, 1101, after narrowly escaping death on Hainan Island, Su Shi wrote this letter during his journey to Nanjing, expressing his greetings and blessings to his friend Du Chuan. The script approaches a regular script style with broad characters and heavy ink application. Each stroke is deliberately slow and characters stand independently, reflecting sincerity and carefulness. The style shows influences from the Tang calligrapher Li Yong, evident in the slightly raised right shoulder of the strokes, and incorporates a trembling brush effect inspired by Yan Zhenqing. The overall composition presents a simple, steady rhythm with a solemn atmosphere, without strong contrasts in character size or line thickness. This work embodies Su Shi’s late calligraphy and Song Dynasty artistic traits. — National Palace Museum 國立故宮博物院,臺北 / National Palace Museum, Taipei · 依館方資料整理及英譯 / Based on museum information; English translation.
