Karpathy just rebuilt YouTube recommendations from scratch, and the part I keep coming back to is what he left out. He gave Opus 5.5 one job: mine 20 years of Hacker News comments and keep only videos people kept recommending. The result is HackerTube: 6,454 videos across 150 topics, from 2007 to 2026, filtered from about 40,000 recommending comments. No accounts, no engagement feed. State lives in your browser, thumbnails come from the middle of the video instead of the clickbait frame, and the underlying comment data ships as a zip so you can build your own version. The build took about two hours, and Karpathy says his only manual work was an API key, a VPS, and a domain. The rest, including Sonnet filtering out spam in a Claude Code workflow, was delegated. I trust a 20-year archive of engineers telling each other what to watch more than any feed optimized to keep me scrolling. That is the real shift here, not the two-hour build time. If your recommendations came from a community archive instead of an engagement algorithm, what would you watch first? https://hackertube.org/ #AI #HackerNews
