National Palace Museum The Tang dynasty (618-907 AD) sancai (three-color) statue of the Zengzhang Heavenly King is a large funerary guardian figure marked by fierce expression and detailed attire. The figure wears a helmet, tight armor, leather belt, knee guards, and leg bindings, fully equipped for protection. Its brows are furrowed and eyes wide open, holding one hand on its hip and the other fist raised. The right leg is straight while the left is slightly bent, stepping on a reclining ox. The statue is brightly glazed in green, brown, and white, showcasing the sancai glazing technique widely used in Tang tomb art to ward off evil. Donated by the wife of former Japanese Prime Minister Sato Eisaku, the piece represents the high craftsmanship and funerary customs of the Tang period.
