A salary, in a sense, is a slow-acting poison. Many people don’t have the patience to spend two or three years building their own business, yet somehow have almost unlimited patience to spend thirty years working for someone else. Why? Because their paycheck arrives on time every month. It offers immediate rewards, predictable income, a seemingly certain tomorrow, and a sense of security they can see and feel. Over time, that security can quietly erode their ambition. They grow accustomed to being managed, following instructions, and eventually stop imagining a different kind of life. Building your own business, on the other hand, often means spending the first few years without stable income, without applause, and without any guarantee of success. Just endless trial and error, long periods of silence, late nights filled with self-doubt, and the ridicule, skepticism, and judgment of people around you. People would rather endure thirty years of familiar limitations than face three years of unfamiliar uncertainty. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with having a job, and starting a business doesn’t guarantee success. The real tragedy is wanting to change your life but repeatedly giving up the opportunity because that paycheck keeps arriving every month. Perhaps the most dangerous cost of a salary isn’t that it limits your income, but that it slowly takes away your courage to choose a different life.
