@Google says a TPU on its Project Suncatcher prototype satellite ran Gemma 4 in orbit and sent a haiku back to Earth: "Blue marble below / Data streams in silent grace / Starlight feeds my core." Google calls it the first AI response from orbit by a data-center-class TPU. The startup Starcloud had already run Gemma on an Nvidia chip in orbit in late 2025, so this first is about Google's own chip. The refrigerator-sized satellite launched Oct. 1 on a @SpaceX rideshare. It carries four TPUs but generates at most 1 kW, so only one runs at a time. What it shows: the chip survived launch, powered up in orbit, ran a model, and sent the answer home. What it doesn't show yet: how the chip holds up over time in space. In-orbit radiation and thermal tests come next. The harder parts of a space data center are still ahead: laser links between satellites, tight formation flying, and launch costs that Google's own paper says depend on very cheap, very frequent heavy launches. Google plans to launch two more satellites in 2027 to test a laser link between them.
