Tonya Harding: Her Team Broke Her Rival's Leg, and Her Career Broke With It On 6 January 1994, after a practice session at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit, Nancy Kerrigan was struck on the leg with a baton and left screaming, "Why me?" The attacker, Shane Stant, had been hired by people around Tonya Harding — her ex-husband Jeff Gillooly and her bodyguard Shawn Eckardt. Harding denied knowing in advance. America watched the two women anyway at the Lillehammer Olympics weeks later — Kerrigan took silver, Harding finished eighth, after stopping mid-routine in tears to show the judges a broken skate lace and begging for a re-skate. It remains one of the most humiliating scenes in Olympic history. In March 1994, Harding pleaded guilty to conspiring to hinder the prosecution. She was stripped of her national title and banned for life by the U.S. Figure Skating Association. The skater who had landed a triple axel on the biggest stage was finished at 23. She didn't lose to Kerrigan in the end. She lost to the plan meant to beat her.
