OpenAI just made its data centers answerable to the grid, and that is the shift I have been waiting for. Its Grid Protectors program launched November 2, starting in Georgia. https://openai.com/index/grid-protectors-program/ For its Effingham County campus, OpenAI committed to pay the full infrastructure and electricity costs, and its Georgia Power agreement includes up to 1,000 MW of flexible demand response, so the campus can turn down when the grid is under strain. Context matters. US data center capacity is projected to exceed 100 GW by 2030, and Georgia Power projects about $950 million in annual customer savings beginning in 2029 from its portfolio of large load agreements, including Project Camellia. That saving is a portfolio number, not a single campus credit. My test for any AI campus is now simple. Publish the curtailment hours, the megawatts, and the bill. If a campus cannot turn down on a heat wave day, its green claims are just marketing.
