🎃Halloween's over. What happens to all those jack-o'-lanterns? A scary number: according to an estimate cited by Colorado State University, more than 1 billion pounds of pumpkins end up in US landfills every year. The problem isn't just waste. Buried under layers of trash without oxygen, pumpkins can't break down properly and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas. There are better options:
Compost it: pumpkins are full of water and break down quickly. Just remove candles, stickers and glitter first
Feed livestock: some farms collect leftover pumpkins for their cows and pigs
Find a Pumpkin Smash: many communities hold post Halloween events where people smash pumpkins for composting, including Halifax and Campbell River, BC here in Canada One thing to avoid: don't leave pumpkins out for wildlife. The University of Illinois Extension advises against it. A pumpkin grows all season and shines for one night only. Send it back to the soil and it can help grow next year's crops
