Despite still glorifying their steppe ancestors, Turks frequently discriminate against East Asians based on appearance. This attitude even affects their own citizens who retain more East Asian facial features. The image is from a Turkish local news report that prompted reflection and apologies from many reasonable people in the country. Translation: A Turkish child bothered by being called a “foreigner”: — My dad is Turkish, my mom is a Kipchak Turk. Why do they call me a “foreigner”? — Your eyes are a bit slanted, maybe that’s why. — I just take after my mom, but I am Turkish. — What are we supposed to say then? — How happy is the one who says “I am a Turk”! (A famous quote by the founding father Atatürk.) We can see that the little girl in the news and the girl in the right image of the OP’s post actually look somewhat similar. Turkish netizens: when you racially discriminate against East Asians, plenty of other non-East Asians with no class jump in and pile on, inflating the likes and retweets. But I think this is truly unwise. On one hand, it damages East Asians’ impression of you. On the other, it makes us feel sympathy for those living in your own country who retain more East Asian ancestry yet still face discrimination.
