Now you can understand why Chinese pays so much attention to him. Piyush Goyal is after all India’s Commerce and Industry Minister and his efforts to expand manufacturing in India directly challenge China’s position as a major supplier. That said, even some of his policies have disappointed me. Being overly optimistic about him is just as misleading as being overly pessimistic The reality lies somewhere in between. Perhaps we should have anticipated this back in 2024, when China first began restricting exports of critical machinery. The same risk applies to other industrial goods and components that India still imports from China. China may not impose restrictions on everything today but it could do so tomorrow. At the same time it will keep trying to expand its presence in the Indian market, especially through its finished products. India would be better off preparing now identifying critical dependencies, developing domestic capabilities and diversifying suppliers rather than waiting for the next restriction and only then beginning to work on a solution.
