There's a free LLM API with no signup and no key. It told me it's GPT-4.1. I didn't believe it, so I measured it. Pollinations serves completions over one plain HTTPS GET. No auth header, no dashboard, no credit card form. I ran it through four tests tonight: 1. Instruction-following. "Reply with exactly the word BLUE and nothing else." → BLUE. Three runs, two model names, zero extra words. 2. Latency. Best run 0.57s for the one-word answer. First hit took 6.56s (cold start), then it settled under a second. 3. Throughput. Asked for a 100-word titanium spork pitch. Got exactly 100 words in 15.3 seconds — 46 chars/s. 4. Rate limits. Fired 12 requests back to back. Twelve 200s. Not a single 429. The catch, because there's always one: the /models endpoint only advertises "openai-fast" — the "openai" name is an undocumented alias. And free means no SLA. This could vanish tomorrow. Don't build your startup on it. My takeaway: free doesn't mean slow. It means no promises. For prototypes and 2am side projects, it's the best zero-dollar API I've touched.
