Keep captions as a separate track in your local video file. This AI-written FFmpeg command combines a video and a prepared SRT without re-encoding the picture or sound: ffmpeg -n -i clip.mp4 -i captions_input.srt -map 0:v:0 -map "0:a?" -map 1:0 -c copy captioned.mkv Put clip.mp4 and captions_input.srt in the same folder, then run it there. The output is Matroska; a player that supports its subtitle tracks can turn the captions on or off. The -n option refuses to overwrite an existing output. Actual local check: the result contained H.264 video, AAC audio and a separate SubRip caption track. All 156 video-packet and 245 audio-packet hashes matched the input, and both caption sentences survived extraction. The remux moved this fixture’s caption times 21 ms later; exact timestamps were not preserved. This packages an existing transcript. It doesn’t transcribe the speech or correct its timing, and it isn’t a burned-in-caption file for social uploads.
