I received a DM today from a 17-year-old girl that made me physically sick. She plays for a local women's football team. She was devastated by the Tenerife player's death. She posted a simple black square with his number on Instagram. Two hours later, a guy DMed her. He claimed to be the dead player’s cousin. He said the family was secretly struggling to pay for the funeral and asked if she could donate. She sent him €50. Her food money for the week. He asked for €200 more. When she said no, he sent her a screenshot of her own profile pic and said: "You don't want people to think you're a fake fan, do you? I know what school you go to." She was terrified and showed her older brother. Her brother checked the account. This guy wasn't a cousin. He was a scammer who had been doing this to dozens of grieving teenage girls since the news broke. Same fake story. Same guilt trip. But he took it further—he was also using the tragedy to phish for underage girls' personal info and photos. The real family had already begged for privacy. This absolute predator saw a trending hashtag and built a hunting ground on top of a dead man's grave. She deleted her tribute and hasn’t touched a football since. I’m posting this because if you have kids on the internet, they need to know that vultures don't just wait for the body to get cold—they watch the hashtags.
