I think using AI to read papers is perfectly fine. In fact, refusing to use it just to prove you can read English feels a little pointless. But there's a difference between using AI to accelerate understanding and outsourcing understanding altogether. AI is great for navigating unfamiliar concepts, summarizing related work, and explaining difficult sections. But when it comes to methodology, mathematical assumptions, experimental design, and limitations, I still think reading the original paper matters enormously. A summary tells you what the paper claims. Actually reading it helps you understand whether those claims are justified. And sometimes the most important insight comes from a tiny detail that no summarizer would consider worth mentioning. The real skill isn't reading papers without AI. It's developing enough scientific judgment to recognize when AI has misunderstood the paper.
