Her salary: $15,000/month. His salary: $3,000/month. They live in a house she bought before the marriage. Wife: "Since we believe in equality, I want you to start paying me $1,500 a month for rent and half of all utilities. It’s only fair." Husband: "Fair to who? You pay the mortgage, but I’m the one who cooks every meal, does all the laundry, and takes care of your sick mother three days a week." Wife: "That’s emotional support. This is business. You live here, you pay your share." Husband: "Okay. Let's do the math." He pulled out a piece of paper. Husband: "A live-in maid costs $2,500/month. A private chef is $3,000/month. An in-home nurse for your mother is $4,000/month. My total market value to this household is $9,500 a month." Wife: "Don't be ridiculous. You're my husband, not an employee." Husband: "Exactly. But you just treated me like a tenant." Husband: "So let's deduct your $2,000 rent and utilities. That leaves you owing me $7,500 a month in unpaid labor." Wife: "I never asked you to do all that. You do it because you love me." Husband: "And I thought you loved me enough not to charge me rent."
