I have a simple rule for open model launches, and Tencent's Hy4 just gave me a reason to use it again. A model is not open until I can download its weights. Hy4 launched today, November 4, and on paper it looks like a big step. It is a 770 billion parameter model with vision for the first time in the Hunyuan line, plus computer use across command line tools and graphical interfaces. Tencent says it tuned the model for office work, financial analysis, and game development, with product teams testing it against real workflows. It is already live in Yuanbao, WorkBuddy, CodeBuddy, and ima, plus Tencent Cloud TokenHub and OpenRouter. Here is the catch I keep coming back to. The weights are not out yet. Tencent says it plans to release them, along with a fuller system card, but gave no date. The preview from August is the one sitting on Hugging Face. So right now, what you can actually use is a hosted API, priced at $0.834 per million input tokens and $2.501 per million output tokens, with a 50 percent TokenHub discount through December 31 and a free quota in WorkBuddy and CodeBuddy from November 4 to 15. I am not dismissing the release. Vision plus computer use is a real expansion, and the Reuters reporting that Tencent filtered exploit development, reverse engineering, and penetration testing material from training is a safety choice worth debating on its own. Filtering defensive content in is easy to praise. Filtering offensive capability out is harder to verify without the weights and the system card in hand. My checklist before I call any model open, and I use it every time now: 1. Can I download the weights today, not soon. 2. Is the license clear and usable. 3. Have independent teams reproduced the headline benchmarks. Hy4 passes zero of the three today, on the public record I could check. That does not make it a bad model. It makes the top tier claim premature.
