There’s something genuinely beautiful about this. We often talk about research as a pursuit of individual curiosity, but science is also a collective effort that spans generations. Sometimes the most meaningful contribution isn’t starting something entirely new, but preserving and extending a line of inquiry that might otherwise disappear. Twenty years is an extraordinary commitment. But I also think academic traditions should survive because they continue to generate meaningful questions, not simply because someone feels obligated to preserve them. The best form of scientific inheritance isn’t repeating what previous generations did. It’s taking their unfinished questions somewhere they could never have imagined.
