I have not minced words in calling Abdul El-Sayed an anti-American bigot based on the campaign he has run, his alignment with both Hasan Piker and Tucker Carlson, and his rhetoric of division and hate. Now he faces a choice about what kind of senator he will become. He can follow the path of Democratic senators Theodore Bilbo, James Eastland, and Allen Ellender, who entered the Senate as committed segregationists and used their power to advance that toxic ideology. Or he can follow the path of Lyndon Johnson, who entered the Senate opposing federal civil rights legislation but changed course and became a great champion of transformative civil rights laws. El-Sayed has been a toxic and divisive candidate. I hope he will have the wisdom to rise to the historic opportunity before him.
