I think there’s a deeper reason why PhD students become defensive during academic discussions. A PhD defense is supposed to be an intellectual exchange, but it’s also a highly asymmetric power relationship. The people asking the questions have considerable influence over your degree, your academic reputation, and sometimes your future career. Under those circumstances, even a question asked out of genuine curiosity can feel like a threat. And I find this a little ironic. Academia constantly emphasizes intellectual honesty, critical thinking, and the importance of acknowledging uncertainty. Yet we sometimes create environments where admitting “I don’t know” feels dangerous. Of course, rigorous questioning is essential to science. But so is creating an environment where young researchers can acknowledge their limitations without feeling that their entire competence is being judged. A healthy research culture shouldn’t just teach students how to defend their ideas. It should make them feel safe enough to question those ideas themselves.
