Sometimes I genuinely wonder how certain people become professors. I recently saw a discussion where a professor said he would only hire PhD students and postdocs who are smarter than him. Someone responded by questioning why anyone smarter would want to work under him in the first place. I find that mentality genuinely disturbing. Since when did academic supervision become a competition to determine who is intellectually superior? A professor’s responsibility is to recognize talent, provide mentorship, secure resources, and help young researchers become independent scientists. Your students are not supposed to spend five years proving that you’re smarter than them. And frankly, if your ego cannot tolerate the possibility that your students might surpass you, perhaps you should reconsider whether you’re suited to mentoring anyone. The purpose of academia is to advance human knowledge, not to preserve a professor’s position in the intellectual hierarchy. A great mentor should be proud when their students become better than them. That’s the whole point of education.
